Learning Areas

English

Students view and read a wide range of visual texts with purpose, understanding and critical awareness. They are able to interpret ideas and information in order to carry out tasks and use information to share and extend ideas and understanding.

Students have the opportunity to experience a very visual experience as they cruise through the interesting Mandurah waterways, observing historical sites as well as abundant marine life within the natural environment. The cruise requires students to listen and interpret information through the detailed commentary as well as read fact sheets and complete an activity booklet.

Science

Students understand that living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves and live in different places where their needs are met. Living things adapt and also depend on each other and the environment to survive. Students learn the importance of sustainability with the survival of living things depending upon the physical conditions of their environment. Students develop an understanding that the earth’s resources, including water are used in a variety of ways and students recognise the interdependence of life between marine life and humans.

Students learn in depth about Mandurah’s marine environment including specific wildlife as well as factors effecting the ecosystem such as marine debris and pollution, erosion and tidal changes. Students develop an understanding about sustainability measures and its importance for preserving the environment for future generations. Mandurah Cruises provides students an insight into how Mandurah has formed and changed due to the waterways over the years and how it is a fundamental feature to the area.

History

Students distinguish the differences and similarities between their daily lives and life during their parents’ and grandparents’ childhoods. This includes family traditions, leisure time and communications. They have an opportunity to explore and compare a range of historically or culturally important buildings, sites or parts of the natural environment in the local community and what it reveals about the past and present. Students learn about a significant individual or group that played a vital role in shaping the region.

This education cruise provides students with a historical awareness that develops curiosity and imagination. It promotes the understanding of Mandurah’s past events, movements and developments that have significantly shaped the area. A knowledge and understanding of history is a key factor for informed and active participation in Australia’s diverse society. Ultimately the cruise provides a unique floating classroom that allows students to experience Mandurah’s history first hand as the vessel travels past different sites of historical importance.

Geography

Students understand the similarities and differences between places in terms of their type of settlement, demographic characteristics and the lives of the people who live there. Students learn the importance of the environment to animals and people, and different views on how it can change and how it can be protected and used sustainably.  Students learn the forms that water takes as a resource and how it connects places as it moves through the environment and the way this affects places and people. Students recognise the economic, cultural, spiritual and aesthetic value of water for people, including Aboriginal people.

Mandurah Cruises provides students a structured way of exploring, analysing and understanding the characteristics of a place. Students gain knowledge and discover why Mandurah is the way it is including the vital interrelationship between the environment and human actions. Geography provides students an understanding into the concept of change and how this explains present and the possible future of the area. Students will have an insight into Mandurah life and how dependant the area is on the waterways through recreational and professional use.

Cross Curriculum Priorities

Aboriginal history and culture plays a fundamental role in Mandurah. Throughout the cruise students will deepen their knowledge of how the local Aboriginal community holds a unique belief system and how they are spiritually connected to the land, sea, sky and waterways. Students will understand how the Aboriginal people maintain a special connection to and responsibility for Country/Place and how this has influenced the regions past and present.

Mandurah Cruises provides students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of sustainability practices used in the marine environment. Education for sustainability allows students to develop knowledge, skills, values and views. This understanding is necessary in order for people to meet the needs of the present without compromising future generation’s needs. The cruise highlights particular sustainability measures practiced in Mandurah and how this has provided positive effects on the area.
